RIWG: Specialist Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics (SKTM) – Secondary

This programme is designed to support teachers to be able to implement the maths curriculum with impact.

This Work Group is suitable for those in secondary settings.

The focus of this programme is arithmetic, algebra and multiplicative reasoning.

This virtual Work Group will provide opportunities to look at key content in depth, examining the mathematics and how to teach it. The course will also provide opportunities for participants to reflect upon and develop their pedagogy using the framework of a mastery model of learning.

8 sessions.

Session 1: The Beginning | 13th January –  Why is doing maths different to teaching maths? What is mastery all about? What elements of your knowledge and practice are you hoping to develop? How will we evaluate the impact?

Session 2: Subject Knowledge – Part 1 | 27th January 2021

Session 3: Subject Knowledge – Part 2 | 11th February 2021

Session 4: Subject Knowledge – Part 3 | 3rd March 2021

Sessions 2, 3 & 4 will give you the opportunity to look at 3 different areas of maths in depth, exploring explanations, representations, task design and questioning. Each session will include a short section around examining a piece of research or evidence related to pedagogy.

Session 5: Subject Knowledge – Part 4 | 23rd March 2021

Session 6: Subject Knowledge – Part 5 | 21st April 2021

Session 7: Subject Knowledge – Part 6 | 26th May 2021

Sessions 5, 6 & 7 will give you the opportunity to revisit the 3 areas of maths after have tried out some of the ideas. A chance to reflect, amend and adapt your practice and deepen your understanding.

Session 8: What Next? | TBC –  An opportunity to evaluate the impact of the professional development and decide upon your next steps.

The Specialist Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics Work Group is fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme so is free to participating schools.
