Open Classroom – How a typical lesson has changed as a result of the Shanghai exchange.

Target Audience: Y1-6 teachers who want to see how Mastery maths has been implemented across the school after a visit to Shanghai 4 years ago.

Description: Copley Primary School started its Mastery journey 4 years ago after a visit to Shanghai by its Headteacher. We implemented same day teacher led intervention and a split maths lesson to help this. Our CPA approach and careful use of small steps has helped all our pupils achieve. We no longer differentiate and children are sat in mixed ability pairs

Open Classroom – Lessons learnt from Shanghai

Ester spent two weeks in Shanghai observing maths teaching in Shanghai schools.  Ester’s lesson with her Year 5 class will demonstrate how she has changed her lesson design and structure to reflect the effective practice she observed in Shanghai – particularly how she takes the children together as a class on their learning journey.

Open Classroom – Using representation and structure to achieve a deeper understanding, moving to a CPA approach

Target Audience:  Year 1- 6 teachers who want to develop the use of representation and structure and Maths Co-ordinators who are looking at lesson design in their school.

Description: Throughout school we have had a big focus on representation and structure and how to incorporate this into different year groups and different areas of Maths.   We have also focused on how to design lessons to ensure the elements of Mastery are integrated.

Open classroom – : Providing opportunities for all children to access ‘depth’

Target Audience: Teachers wanting to develop this aspect of their teaching.

Description: The school adopted the mastery approach in 2017-18 and, after developing the school’s timetable, adopted a Same Day Intervention system from September this year. As well as this, improving our children’s reasoning skills and their ability to answer questions in more depth has also been improved. Mrs Hemingway is keen to share her new approaches to mathematics teaching and the impact the changes the school has made have had.
