This lesson will focus on problem solving. Children will be exposed to an unfamiliar problem which will encourage them to think independently. Through their solutions, a single thread will be drawn out to structure the mathematical thinking behind the lesson.

Our open classroom session, in Y4 will capture the 5 Big Ideas of Teaching for Mastery within a lesson: representation and structure, mathematical thinking, variation, fluency and small coherent steps. We’ll showcase ideas that support keeping the whole class working together whilst addressing the need to promote greater depth for rapid graspers.

Come and see how we are getting our children ready for Teaching for Mastery in Year 1. You are welcome to observe a small group input which incorporates teaching for mastery principles such as stem sentences, mathematical reasoning and variation. You are also welcome to explore how we use our environment to maximise the opportunities for maths in our setting.

This lesson will focus on procedural variation. Children will be exploring addition and subtraction. They will be looking at patterns and connections between calculations and exploring what has stayed the same and what has changed.
