Developing A Level Pedagogy

Develop improved teaching approaches for A level Mathematics.

This Work Group supports experienced A level teachers to further develop their expertise as well as providing a model to support departmental change.  Sessions will focus on the overarching themes in the A level mathematics specification:

  • Mathematical argument, language and proof
  • Mathematical problem-solving at A level
  • Mathematical modelling

You will examine how to develop the ethos, pedagogy, and teaching of these themes, as well as developing strategies for successfully integrating them into your department’s practice. The use of technology in the teaching and learning of A level mathematics also features throughout the course of the Work Group.

There will be 6 half-day/twilight sessions across the first two terms of the academic year. This will be adapted to suit the group’s needs and is likely to be a blended mix of face-to-face and online meetings. Sessions will take place during the Autumn (2022) and Spring (2023) terms with exact dates to be confirmed (these will be published by September 2022).

This project involves a direct working partnership between the Maths Hubs Network and the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme (AMSP) and is free to participating schools.

This Work Group is aimed at existing leaders of A level mathematics teaching or experienced teachers of A level maths who wish to lead the development of pedagogy with other colleagues in their schools.

  • Your students will have a deeper conceptual understanding of the A level Maths content
  • You will understand the purpose of the Overarching Themes, including use of technology, and their impact on teaching and learning in A level Maths
  • You and your department will be equipped to better support the development of stronger subject knowledge pedagogy
  • You and your department will further embed the Overarching Themes into your A level teaching
