Meet our new Teaching for Mastery Specialist

Here’s Ben – our recent starter to the Secondary Teaching for Mastery Specialist Programme.

Ben has recently started on the Teaching for Mastery Programme. He is in cohort 4 of our Secondary Teaching for Mastery Specialists. Read on to find out what inspired Ben to take on the role of Mastery Specialist:

A year and a half ago, before I had the faintest idea about Mastery, I was introduced to the concepts of Variation and Intelligent Practice and I was instantly hooked. I liked the idea of bringing misconceptions right to the forefront of my teaching, either by carefully choosing my examples or through slight changes in the questions.

The next academic year brought a big push from my school’s teaching alliance to develop Mastery. I realised that variation was one of its key components. My Head of Department knew about my interest and allowed me to pursue some CPD sessions about Mastery. This lead me to Doncaster for the Shanghai Exchange where I saw a teacher from Shanghai deliver lessons to British students.

From there, I registered my interest with the Maths Hub and saw an opportunity to be part of the Secondary Mastery Specialist Programme. I spoke with my Head of Department, who was very supportive, and I applied to become a Mastery specialist.

My Mastery journey so far has been amazing. I have enjoyed gaining a deeper understanding of Mastery, sharing ideas with some amazing teachers, and becoming a better teacher.

Meet Jess, another Mastery Specialist to join the WYMH team!
